Mobility Aids – What You Need To Know
By: Chris West
Posted: Mar 29, 2010
A long life can bring a lot of physical problems in its wake. But then it’s completely up to you, whether you want to let these problems ruin your life, or whether you want to take necessary steps to retain the best quality of life possible. If the right resources are available, you would probably choose the latter option. So when moving around becomes increasingly difficult, then it’s definitely time to bring mobility aids into the equation.
Physical disabilities can be really frustrating, particularly when it leaves you confined to your house. Mobility aids help you break out and break free from your limitations! Here’s some of the most common types of mobility devices out there:
Mobility scooters: these are battery powered vehicles, which allow you to roam freely inside your house or even outdoors. You can easily climb up inclines or ramps, if you have a powerful enough scooter. With a mobility scooter by your side, you need not worry about pain, tiredness or injury due to movements.
Electric wheelchairs: these are motorized versions of the good old wheelchair. They are perfect for indoor use and do not require any effort on your part, to move forward. Most models can be easily dismantled, folded up, and carried around.
Stair-lifts: these mobility aids are mostly meant for in-home use and you can have them installed quite easily. Simply take your seat and move up the stairs!
Lift chairs: in case you find it difficult to get up from a sitting position, these chairs can give you the necessary “lift”. Lift chairs can also serve as recliners, allowing you to relax comfortably.
There are also other additional aids which can help you in your day to day activities in the kitchen or bathroom as well.
Mobility devices can be really helpful and a recent research shows that the use of these aids has increased almost 33 times since 1994! So, there is no reason why you cannot join the thousands of people who have successfully empowered themselves by using aids for greater mobility.
Remember that your limited mobility problems are nothing to hide. In fact, by using mobility boosts you can set a great example for others who are apprehensive about using them. A study has shown that fear of being ridiculed prevents many from using aids for mobility. So, you must not harbor such hollow fears and use mobility aids with pride, to give yourself and others suffering from similar issues a better life!

Mobility aids are used to help people walk and move around more easily, they help enable mobility. Mobility aids are used when it is difficult for people to move freely by themselves, for example when a person gets older moving about can become more challenging and so aids are used to help them. It is not just the elderly who use mobility aids, any person with a disability may need to use a mobility aid as well. A person with a hurt or broken leg may need to use crutches to get about for a certain amount of time until the leg is healed, or they may need a wheel chair, there are numerous mobility aids that can be used to enable mobility.
What are some examples of mobility aids?
Wheel Chair – a wheel chair is probably one of the most known about mobility aid as they are seen about a lot for example in hospitals. A wheel chair is a chair that is placed on two large wheels. The wheel chair has handles at the back which allows for a person to push the chair along, or the person in the wheel chair can push the wheels around and maneuver the chair that way. There are many different wheel chairs you can buy today for example there is the standard wheel chair, the standard lightweight chair, paediatric wheelchair, and even wheel chair accessories such as chair waterproof covers and cushions.
Mobility Scooter – is an electric scooter. They are similar in nature to the wheelchair apart from they are electric and so no manual force is required and they have the steering handles in front of the chair. Mobility scooters are great to help people get about with ease, they can be easily taken apart for quick storage either at home or in the boot of the car. Most mobility scooters have a basket on the front which is great for storage for the rider to place their belongings, whether its their handbag, or the items they buy shopping, the scooter makes popping down to the shops as easy as 1-2-3.
Walking Frames and Walking Sticks – these are used to help people to walk who don’t feel comfortable putting a lot of pressure on their body. Have a walking frame or walking stick relieves some of the weight that is put on the body while walking. If a person has a hurt leg or knee for example they can use a walking frame or walking stick to help them along.
There are many more mobility aids available today these are just a few of them, sometimes people have a few aids and use certain ones depending on the activity, for example if it is a long day shopping then a mobility scooter would probably be best or if they are walking about the house then a walking stick is used.

Does anyone know of a way to rent mobility aids?
Posted on 22. Feb, 2011 by Lift Chair Manufacturer.
Question by val: Does anyone know of a way to rent mobility aids?
Both myself and my roommate while we can walk some any small distance is a huge challenge. My roommate has severe hip arthritis – so even walking around Walmart is a huge effort. I have fatigue issues that stem from a neurological disorder. I normally would not use a wheelchair – but to go to a museum or other tourist places that do not provide mobility aids, but require a lot of walking it would be nice to be able to rent some sort of assistive devise. Anyone know where I could get something – keep in mind that I only have a car to transport it, not a van or SUV. I’ve tried the seat canes and they really don’t work very well for me. Any ideas anyone?
Best answer:
Answer by Aragorn
Many museums will have wheelchairs available to loan to you. Call ahead to reserve them in case they’re in short supply. You might also consider purchasing a walker with wheels. There are hospital supply and nursing home supply stores that can also rent them, but sometimes it’s just cheaper to purchase them outright. The walker can be bought for less than $ 100. Wheelchairs are much more. Make sure they fold and lock easily and securely. Best of luck!

As an adult daughter of aging parents I am keenly aware of how mobility aids improve the overall elderly quality of life. As a caregiver one of my goals is to find quality home care mobility products at affordable prices. The three criteria I use when researching mobility aids include sturdy construction, affordable pricing, and fast delivery. The Stander Company manufactures reliable, stable products including the Standers BedCane, the Security and Grab Bar, the Car Caddie, and the Handybar. I have also been able to find a reputable online source offering great prices and fast delivery.
